The purpose of this workshop is to bring together atmospheric scientists and oceanographers working on Spontaneous Imbalance and related problems, in order to foster cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas. Broad objectives include:

(i) gathering various perspectives from theoreticians, observationalists, numerical modelers and experimentalists,

(ii) interfacing theoretical findings with numerical, laboratory and observational experience,

(iii) comparing results obtained with different numerical models and their dependence on horizontal and vertical resolution,

(iv) identifying future research directions.
