Accolade: Jim Secan, Dennis Knepp, and NWRA Received a Thank-You from the European Space Agency

May 2016

Jim Secan, Dennis Knepp, and NWRA received a thank-you letter from Dr. Maurice Borgeaud, the Head of Earth Observation Science, Applications, and Future Technologies Department of the European Space Agency, for their use of the model, WBMOD, which was developed over 40 years ago by NWRA scientists to study ionospheric scintillation.

NWRA made this model freely available to the scientific world shortly after it was developed.Dr. Borgeaud wrote in his letter how WBMOD was a powerful tool used by scientists at the University of Sheffield for the Biomass 7th Earth Explorer mission that allowed them to manage the effects of ionospheric scintillation and obtain the highest of data quality.

Dr. Borgeaud wrote,“…I would like to express the thanks of the Agency for making WBMOD available to our supporting scientists ….It has proved an invaluable resource for us and remains a key factor in preparing for the success of the mission.”

Congratulations Jim, Dennis and NWRA!

Outreach: Larry Mahrt is Releasing a “Much-Improved” Submeso Website

May 2016

The website readdresses turbulence eddies, small scale motions, and typical heterogeneous surfaces that are generally outside the scope of textbooks.

The website uses schematics and visualization of small scale motions using natural and machine generated fog.It also includes general-public information on practical issues (agricultural frost problems, restoration of native plant communities, and dispersion of contaminants).

Find the website at www.submeso.wordpress.com

Well done, Larry!
