Seminar: Statistical Modelling of Stochastic Processes in Epigenetics

February 2, 2015 @ noon

Tom Bartlett (University College London)

Epigenetic patterns are seen as the interface between the environment and the genome, and hence offer a mechanism to understand environmental risk factors of disease. However, we currently know only a small fraction of what there is to know about epigenomic science. Well-known statistical techniques can be successfully adapted to study genomic patterns such as these. For example, time-series methodology is well-suited for this context, because location along the genome carries a natural ordering equivalent to events in time. Network models are also highly applicable, because genes can be modelled as interacting entities, equivalently to friends in a social network. I will explore some of these modelling approaches, and present some results of my work.
