Adventures in Science: January 14, 2020 the first of the STRATEOLE-2 superpressure stratospheric balloons finished their circuit around the world in 63 days!

January 2020

Since then two additional balloons have completed the circuit, and three more balloons are close behind.  STRATEOLE-2 is a French-US collaboration to make measurements of waves, clouds, turbulence, composition, and general circulation.  Eight balloons were launched from the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean during Nov-Dec 2019.  NWRA scientists Joan Alexander and Martina Bramberger are funded by the National Science Foundation to conduct analyses of these innovative measurements aiming to improve global weather forecasts and climate prediction models. Track the balloons’ progress at https://webstr2.lmd.polytechnique.fr/ or watch the balloon launch videos at https://strateole2.aeris-data.fr/
