March 2023
In recent LinkedIn postings on far-side imaging of the sun and the recent GONG/NSO news release on solar activity predictions, Scott McIntosh, Deputy Director of NCAR stated, “The ability to ‘look’ on the Far side of the Sun is one of the greatest advances in our field this century – IMO. Right now that capability is providing the community with critical context of possible events to come as activity stays very high!” The seminal paper by Charlie Lindsey and Doug Braun, "Seismic Images of the Far Side of the Sun," was published in Science in 2000 March. |

Joan Alexander and NWRA’s balloon research was highlighted in a Feb 21 National Public Radio article following the Chinese balloon incident. In general, "balloon researchers are careful to follow airspace and other government regulations," says Joan Alexander, a senior scientist with NorthWest Research Associates, a scientific research organization that regularly works on balloon campaigns. "Our research balloons carry no surveillance capability, and safety is always a primary concern.” In the aftermath of that incident, multiple small balloons were destroyed in the air that were likely either hobby projects or research balloons. https://www.npr.org/2023/02/21/1158303780/when-research-balloons-shot-downscientists-worry Thank you Joan! |
