NWRA Welcomes Magdalena Carranza, Research Scientist, Monterey Office

September 2024

Magdalena joined NWRA in early August to begin writing proposals through us. She will join NWRA as a full-time employee in mid 2025.

Magdalena is a physical oceanographer and graduate of Scripps Oceanography with postdoctoral experience at NCAR and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).

Her research interests lie in the intersection of the atmosphere, oceans and biosphere. She investigates the role that atmospheric forcing plays in changing upper ocean physics and its impacts on phytoplankton bloom development, as well as impacts of synergistic effects between atmosphere and ocean weather dynamics. Her research specifically includes the effects on upper ocean turbulence inferred from Argo floats ascent rate variability.

Please welcome Magdalena!

NWRA Welcomes David B. Parsons, Sr. Research Scientist, Boulder Office

September 2024

Dave joined NWRA as a part-time employee on 1 August to begin writing proposals through us. He has retired from University of Oklahoma and will move to Boulder.

Dave’s science leadership career spans 30 years and has taken him from NCAR Directorship to United Nations Diplomat to University of Oklahoma Director of School of Meteorology.

His PhD is from UW Atmospheric Sciences; his recent research includes the structure and predictability of extreme convective rainfall events, and his collaborative research involves utilizing convective-permitting models and AI to understand and predict forecast failures in global models.

Near future research plans are the study of mesoscale phenomena, such as the nocturnal low-level jet, atmospheric bores, and orographic flows.

Please welcome Dave!
